Week 11 – Friday’s Lunch (Boo!) October 29, 2010

Lunch #48: Hopefully Ava will think her bootiful lunch is spooktacular (yeah, I did go there).  Today she has a jack-o’ lantern sandwich made of natural peanut butter and organic strawberry jam on whole-grain flat bread.  She also has (thanks to Auntie M for the cleaver idea) organic apple slices cut in a ghost shape (using an upside down mini-tulip cookie cutter) with raisin eyes.  Finally, organic yogurt is capped off with a few raisins that spell out: B-O-O!

Feedback from Lunch #47 (Thursday, 10/28/10): She ate the apples, almonds and a few bites of her pasta before disaster hit.  She dropped her fork, and said she was being goofy and accidentally spilled her container.  Pasta down!  She was embarrassed about it and said some kids were laughing.  Oy!  My poor girl!  I told her next time she needs to be more careful and a little less silly (she does love to make people laugh though and I can’t fault her for that).

What Ava Did Not Eat for Lunch: Kids eating lunch from the school cafeteria have a choice of Cheese or Sausage Pizza OR Chicken Nuggets–both served with Tossed Salad and Mixed Vegetables.

Week 11 – Thursday’s Lunch October 28, 2010

Lunch #47: It was a surprising 27  degrees this morning!  Brr!  So, we had another slow mover for us, but I did manage to throw together a lunch I think Ava will enjoy.  In the large compartment of the Easy Lunch Box I placed gluten-free pasta spirals with organic vegetable pasta sauce and a bit of grated Italian blend cheese.  I added a handful of almonds, and sliced organic apples (Granny Smith and Gala–Ava’s special request from the store yesterday).

Feedback from Lunch #46 (Wednesday, 10/27/10): She ate everything once again, but said her Goldfish crackers were soggy.  This was the result of being placed in the compartment next to the applesauce/yogurt mix.  It seems to work better when I place the crackers in a silicone cup inside the larger compartment of the Easy Lunch Box, but because I sliced her grapes, I thought the moisture from those would cause a problem.  Ugh!  Next time I have moist foods in the box, I will probably just skip the crackers altogether.

What Ava Did NOT Eat for Lunch: Today kids buying lunch from the cafeteria have a choice between Corn Dog or Pizza Casserole & Garlic Bread, both served with Baby Carrots, and Vegetarian Baked Beans.

Week 11 – Wednesday’s Lunch October 27, 2010

Lunch #46: We were moving S-L-O-W this morning, because it’s so C-O-L-D!!  I hated to crawl out of my warm bed and face the harsh reality of a morning without heat.  Our goal is to make it to at least November 1, before we fire up the furnace.  Fortunately for us, it’s supposed to warm back up into the fifties later this week, but right now I see snow flurries falling outside my window on this blustery morn.

Anyway, back to lunch.  I need to go to the store, so we’re running with just the basics today: Grapes cut in half to remove the seeds (Ava is not a fan of seeds so I complied…next, I suppose she’ll be wanting them peeled as well…ha!), organic vanilla yogurt with organic applesauce and flax seeds, whole-grain Goldfish crackers, and mini sandwiches of organic almond and apple butters on whole-grain bread.

Feedback from Lunch #45 (Tuesday, 10/26/10): She ate everything.  The graham cracker sandwiches were a BIG hit.  She actually wanted them again for after school snack and again today, but I told her to pace herself.  The funny thing about them is that one day when we were out of bread, I offered them as a solution, and she scoffed at the idea.  Sometimes, Mom really DOES know best.

What Ava Did NOT Eat for Lunch: According to the district menu, kids buying lunch from the cafeteria have a choice of Taco & Chips w/ Taco Toppings or BBQ Chicken on Bun, Corn & Black Bean Salad—both served with Smile Fries.  I think the real question for me was: What the heck is a smile fry?  So of course, I Googled. While some may find them adorable, I think it’s the food equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig.  Creepy!

Week 11 – Tuesday’s Lunch October 26, 2010

Lunch #45: Today’s lunch has gone fruity.  I sliced an organic apple (added a squeeze of lemon) and cut several grapes in half to remove the seeds.  I also used the remaining portion of mandarin orange slices from yesterday. Finally, I added almonds, and sandwiches made from graham crackers we’ve had since summer, natural peanut butter, and organic strawberry jam.

Feedback from Lunch #44 (Monday, 10/25/10)  and a sudden change in appetite: Ava did really well with the Laptop Lunch box (as far as getting it open), and ate everything at school during lunch time except her yogurt with mandarins.  Why?  Because she thought I didn’t give her a spoon (she didn’t see it in its slot), so the yogurt/mandarins became part of her afternoon snack.  Maybe it’s the much cooler weather (drizzly and really windy), but Ava has been really hungry the last couple of days.  Then again, she may be going through another growing spurt (she’s very tall for her age–when she was five people thought she was eight).  Anyhow, last night she kept saying she was SO hungry, while I was preparing dinner (my made-up recipe for organic gluten-free minestrone–it’s chock full of veggies and beans) and once it was ready she scarfed it down and still had room for a snack shortly after.  Then this morning she woke up extra hungry and was annoyed that I made her wait to eat until after she was dressed and had her hair fixed (she usually picks at her cereal so it works better to make sure she is ready for school first).

What Ava Did Not Eat for Lunch: According to the district menu, children buying lunch from school have a choice of Chicken Patty on Bun Or Turkey Ham & Cheese Chef Salad w/ Soft Pretzel–both served with Corn and Seasoned Potato Wedges.  Chicken is healthy right?  Well it can be when it’s not made of processed meat paste (three words to Google: mechanically separated meat).  Also, while it’s nice to offer salad as an option, it would be better to have ones made with spinach leaves rather than the cheaper and less nutritionally sufficient iceberg lettuce.  As for the corn listed today, it’s the sodium laden canned corn which is likely also genetically modified (GMO or “frankenfood”).

Week 11 – Monday’s Lunch October 25, 2010

Lunch #44: Today I decided to give our Laptop Lunch box another chance.  I am thinking Ava will find the containers a bit easier to open now that they’ve been broken in a bit more (via use by Auntie M).  With the extra compartments I was able to create a bigger boxed buffet of things that Ava enjoys: organic pear cubes, organic apple butter and almond butter on whole-grain bread (cut into mini-hearts), almonds, Annie’s Homegrown Bunny Friends, organic vanilla yogurt with a sprinkle of flax seeds, and no sugar added mandarin orange slices.

Feedback from Lunch #43 (Wednesday, 10/20/10–short week last week): She ate everything!  She really made an effort to slow down and eat her food instead of rushing outside to play.  Hopefully over the long weekend she hasn’t forgotten about being hungry last Monday when she chose to play instead of eat.  We had her teacher conference on Thursday, and I was very pleased to hear Ava is doing really well in school.  We had a great weekend with a quick trip to visit Ava’s Granny, and on Saturday, Ava was in a parade.  It’s so nice that she is back to her healthy self again!

What Ava Did NOT Eat for Lunch: Children buying lunch from the cafeteria have a choice of Cheeseburger on Bun or Turkey Egg Roll & Brown Rice w/ Sweet & Sour Sauce—Steamed Broccoli & Oven Fries.  I think it’s nice to see brown rice and steamed broccoli on the district’s menu; we are not consumers of hamburgers without knowing where the meat came from (Google ‘Pink Slime’ ) and likely all of the bread products used by the district contain high fructose corn syrup, which we also shun.

Week Ten – Wednesday’s Lunch (Last One for a Short Week) October 20, 2010

Lunch#43: Today I placed organic pear slices, grapes, almonds and whole-grain Goldfish crackers into the large compartment of her lunch container.  The grapes have seeds, so I already know she’s not going to be loving that.  In the other sections I added organic vanilla yogurt with a sprinkling of flax seeds, and again by Ava’s request we have cucumber and tomato (from our container garden) chunks–this time I tossed them in a splash of blush vinaigrette.  I wanted to added cheddar cheese cubes, but Ava claims she is still “off cheese.”

It’s the last day of the school week for us, as the kids have off on Thursday and Friday due to parent-teacher conferences.  In fact, I have to meet with Ava’s teacher tomorrow afternoon, so here’s hoping for a good academic report.  I was extra proud of her when she recently brought home a certificate/picture indicating she had been selected as one of the school’s good citizens.  While she has her sassy moments (her knew thing is finger snapping) at home, she really is a very kind, sweet, sensitive soul who amazes me everyday.

Feedback from Lunch#42 (Tuesday, 10/19/10): Ava remembered to eat first play second!  She ate everything and remarked that she does really “like hummus.”

What Ava Did NOT Eat for Lunch: According to the district menu, kids buying lunch from the cafeteria have a choice of French Toast Sticks & String Cheese or Chili Burrito and Creamy Coleslaw–both with Hash Brown Sticks.

Week Ten – Tuesday’s Lunch October 19, 2010

Lunch#42: I made hummus this morning, so I took an Earth Grains Multi-grain Thin Bun and a little smear of that yummy garlicky goodness and made Ava some little sandwich wedges.  I also added organic apple slices, cucumber and tomatoes (from our container garden) to her box today.  The tomatoes were by request.  Yesterday I was snacking on one and Ava asked what I was eating, so I told her and asked her if she wanted a bite.  She said, yeah and proceeded to finish the rest as she declared, “These are SO yum, and they are healthier (than from the store) too!  I want some for lunch tomorrow. ”

Feedback from Lunch#41 (10/18/10): My darling girl came home VERY hungry yesterday.  Why?  She didn’t eat the majority of her food at lunch time.  Why?  She said she was in a hurry to get outside to play.  After school when we arrived home, she grabbed her lunch pail and devoured the rest of her food as I explained why she was SO hungry.  I told her that she needs brain food during the day to help her learn, and added that she really needs to use her lunch time to eat first and play second.  She said she would try to remember, and asked me to write a note to put in her box.  Since she is not yet a proficient reader, the message is to be simple: EAT.

What Ava Did NOT Eat for Lunch: Kids buying lunch from the school cafeteria have their choice of Chicken Tenders & Bread Stick or Turkey & Cheese Deli Sandwich–both with Oven Baked Fries and Baked Beans.
